Resolution in Memory of Harvey Milk

Adopted by the New York Democratic State Committee

Albany, NY,  September 28, 1998

 

            WHEREAS, November 27, 1998 marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic assassination of Harvey Milk, the first gay Supervisor of the City of San Francisco, and of George Moscone, the Mayor of San Francisco, and

            WHEREAS, Harvey Milk was a courageous advocate for gay and lesbian rights and well as for the rights of African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and other underrepresented minorities, and

            WHEREAS, Harvey Milk’s service in elected office was a major advance towards representation of gays and lesbians in public life and towards equal rights for gays and lesbians, and

            WHEREAS, Harvey Milk was a native of Nassau County, New York, a graduate of Albany Teacher’s College, and a longtime resident of New York County before moving to San Francisco, and it especially appropriate that New Yorkers should honor the memory of this distinguished native son, now, therefore,

            BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the New York State Democratic Committee proudly honors the courageous legacy of native New Yorker Harvey Milk, and

            BE IT HEREBY FURTHER RESOLVED, that the New York State Democratic Committee urges appropriate memorials and remembrance of Harvey Milk for the 20th anniversary of his assassination on November 27.
