RESOLUTION PRIVATE

                              New York State Democratic Committee

The New York State Democratic Committee, representing the grassroots of the Democratic Party from every Assembly District across the State of New York, offers our tremendous thanks to Governor Mario Cuomo for his devoted leadership of our state and our party over the past twelve years.

It is often said that politics is a thankless business, in which long and selfless service is quickly forgotten, but we grassroots Democrats want Mario Cuomo to know that we will always remember the greatness of his leadership.  In so many ways our state is better off as a result of Governor Cuomo's dedication to improving our infrastructure, our business climate, and the health, education and well-being of all New Yorkers.  In so many ways, our party is also better off for the high standards of idealism and self-sacrifice set for us by Governor Cuomo.

It is time for the Democratic Party to go forward and lay the groundwork for reclaiming state government from the cynical control of George Pataki and Alfonse D'Amato.  As we prepare to close the books on the last campaign however, we are left with a debt which tremendously handicaps our ability to rebuild our party and offer New York the new political leadership so sorely needed.  In the flurry of the campaign, many campaign expenses were charged to the Democratic State Committee which should have been the responsibility of the Cuomo campaign.  The debt incurred in our name apparently exceeds a half million dollars, while the Friends of Mario Cuomo ended the campaign with a surplus of perhaps a half million dollars.

In keeping with the high standards Mario Cuomo has always observed, we therefore appeal to the Friends of Mario Cuomo to apply all of its remaining funds to paying off the debts from the 1994 campaign.  Let us go forward knowing that in all ways Governor Cuomo has left our party a better and stronger force for political good than the party he came to lead in 1982.
